WILLIAMSON COUNTY, TX — The holidays wouldn't be the same without bundling the family in the car — or venturing out one one's own — to take in some Christmas lights. If you wonder where the most sparkliest are located, we've got you covered.
This could be the mother of all lighting displays in Cedar Park, with more than 175,000 of them on display — more than 7,000 on the Christmas tree alone. Two hours' worth of holiday music adds to the ambiance with a playlist of more than 50 songs played in the background. Heritage Park Neighborhood Christmas Lights
The Heritage Park Neighborhood has had a long tradition in decorate the tallest tree in the neighborhood with lights — more than 65,000 of them. But lights are just the beginning. A reproduction (or is it?) of Santa's workshop is there each year, along with carriage rides, games, inflatables for the kids, music, prizes and photos with the jolly old elf. Parents wanting their children to be photographed should BYOC (bring your own camera). A holiday coloring contest for children in kindergarten and first grade yields the winner given a reward of lighting up the tree. The city's prized Heritage Oak Tree — believed to be more than 400 years old — is adorned with more than 60,000 lights as part of the City’s Holiday Tree Lighting and Santa’s Workshop that took place on Friday, Dec. Coloring Contest first place winner Lucas Rupp had the honor of turning on the lights this year.. He was recognized on stage at the ceremony along with second-place winner James King and third-place winner Gemma Smith. Click here for a Flickr album of the event.
Rhodes Family Christmas Lights
The Rhodes family of Cedar Park are local celebrities of a kind. Their home was once featured on ABC's Great Christmas Light Fight. A generous family in offering their light show for the masses, they also walk the walk in their ordinary lives collecting perishable food items for the local food bank.
There are more 25,000 red, white and blue LED lights featured in a display that is both holidayesque and patriotic. As centerpiece is an 18-foot Christmas tree with some 2,000 additional LED rotating in a seemingly infinite pattern of colors, pictures, words and designs synchronized to music. It's rather mesmerizing. Among the songs played is a tribute to troops overseas.
In the county seat of Georgetown there are similarly magnificent displays:
Shady Oaks Christmas Lights Display
