Big Community Celebration Planned As Leander Library Turns 30
Public invited to fete facility, with displays, special guests, a winter wonderland backdrop, holiday crafts, yummy treats and Santa!

LEANDER, TX — A community celebration is scheduled this weekend to mark the Leander Public Library's 30th anniversary, city officials announced.
This year marks 30 years for the library (how time flies, right?). To mark the milestone, the entire community is invited to celebrate on Saturday, Dec. 2, from 10 a.m. to noon. The library's history and service to the community will be highlighted, with special displays set up and special guests in attendance.
"A lot has happened in our community and library since 1987!" officials wrote as part of the invitation.

Indeed. Ronald Reagan was still in office. We checked with The People History website to jog our memory, and here is a snapshot of 1987:
- The year-end close for the Dow Jones Industrial Average was 1,938. To put this in perspective, the Dow opened at a volume of 24,000 on Thursday, Nov. 30, 2017, for the first time, and is expected to soar past 25,000 imminently.
- The average cost of a new home was $92,000, with the median price of an existing home at $85,000.
- Average annual income was $24,350.
- Average monthly rent was $395.
- The average price for a new car was a little more than $10,300.
- A gallon of gas was 89 cents. Eighty-nine cents!
- A pound of bacon was $1.80. One dollar and eighty cents! Mmmmm, bacon.
- A dozen eggs was 65 cents. That's like five cents per egg! Well, almost six cents, but still.
In addition to marking the anniversary, organizers will also stage a "Winter Wonderland" to celebrate the season: "We'll have holiday crafts, plenty of yummy treats, and of course, Santa will be here to visit with the kids," officials promised. "We'll also be kicking off our Winter Reading Club for all ages."
