Cedar Park Drinking Water Safe, Unaffected By Austin Flood Woes

Despite far-reaching boil-water notice in Austin where water quality was compromised by flooding, city says local water is safe to consume.

CEDAR PARK, TEXAS — Despite a far-reaching water-boil notice for the city of Austin in the wake of flooding, the water supply in Cedar Park is safe without the need for boiling before consumption, city officials said.

Austin water officials issued a boil-water notice to Austin residents after water quality was deemed poor, suffused with debris, mud and silt following historic flooding in the region last week. It's the first time in the city's history that such a notice has had to be issued. In addition to the boiling notice, residents were urged to postpone doing laundry or running their dishwashers and keeping showers brief to limit the flow of water running through water treatment plants as crews work to filter out flood-related detritus.

"We want to assure you that the City of Cedar Park’s water supply is not experiencing the same issues at this time," Cedar Park officials said. "While the City of Cedar Park and Austin both draw water from Lake Travis, the City of Cedar Park has separate water intake facilities that draw and treat water from a different area, the Sandy Creek arm, of Lake Travis," officials explained. "It is our normal procedure to test and check our water as it is shared through our water distribution system."

"We draw from the Sandy Creek arm of Lake Travis where we are not experiencing the level of silt and debris that our neighbors are," city spokeswoman Jennie Huerta added in a subsequent email to Patch.

Nevertheless, Cedar Park officials said, continued water monitoring would continue updates planned should the local scenario change: "We are monitoring the situation with our neighbors in Austin closely. This is an ever-changing situation and we will continue to update you if there are any changes."

In their alert to the public, Cedar Park officials reiterated the point in assuaging residents' fears: "Once again, we want to assure you that the City of Cedar Park’s water supply is not affected by the City of Austin’s boil water notice at this time."

Along with their notice, city officials issued a map of the water distribution area for residents unsure whether they live within the geographical boundaries where the water has been deemed safe to consume. Those living outside the outlined boundaries were directed to follow instructions outlined by Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services.
