Get Your Read On At Leander Public Library This Summer

Summer reading club kicking off this weekend, and various other events scheduled throughout the summer.

LEANDER, TX — The 2018 Summer Reading Club kicks off on this Saturday.

The reading club will open in grand style from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with a summer picnic and School of Rock Austin. Lots of activities will be available for all ages until Aug. 3, Leander Public Library officials said.

For the reading club, voracious readers will be categorized according to age:

Ages 0-3: Soft Rock Readers

Sign up in person at the library and receive a shoelace, large button, and a reading log with instructions about how to earn more buttons. Each time you come into the library, you can turn in your card and receive a button to add to your chain. You may also earn up to 1 ticket per day for turning in your log (even if you turn in more than one). Every Tuesday, beginning June 19, a new winner will be drawn. Your ticket stays in for the next week’s drawing if you were not a winner.

Ages 4-11: Hard Rock Readers

Sign up in person at the library and receive a necklace chain, bead, and a reading log with instructions about how to earn more beads. Each time you come into the library, you can turn in your card and receive beads to add to your chain. You may also earn up to 1 ticket per day for turning in your log (even if you turn in more than one). Every Tuesday, beginning June 19, a new winner will be drawn. Your ticket stays in for the next week’s drawing if you were not a winner.

Ages 12-18: Punk Rock Readers

Sign up in person at the library and receive a scratch-off ticket that might be an instant winner. Earn 1 scratch-off ticket for every hour you read, every hour you volunteer, or every program you attend. If your ticket is not an instant winner, you can use it as a raffle ticket for our weekly prizes. Every Tuesday, beginning June 19, a new winner will be drawn. Your ticket stays in for the next week’s drawing if you were not a winner.

18 and Older: Classic Rock Readers

For every book you read you are eligible for a raffle ticket. The more you read, the better your chances of winning fun prizes! Every Tuesday, beginning June 19, a new winner will be drawn. Your ticket stays in for the next week’s drawing if you were not a winner.

All winners will be notified by phone and must claim their prize within one month’s time, library officials said. Participants are eligible to win the weekly prize only once during the summer, officials added.

To keep the reading celebration going throughout the summer, there are various weekly events scheduled:

  • Manic Monday: Mondays @ 2pm (K-5th grade.) Hands-on workshops like first aid, music-making, rock walls & more.
  • Tuesday’s Got Talent: Tuesdays @ 10 and 11. Come see a different performer each week. Pick your show time.
  • StudioSpace Tech Lab: Tuesdays from 1-4 pm. Discover a new technology each week. All ages.
  • Chat-N-Chew: Wednesdays @ 2 pm: Bring a book that you are reading, and tell us all about it! We will have snacks and time to hear what others are reading, too! All ages.
  • Craft Club: Thursdays starting @ 10 am. Crafting day! All ages; while supplies last.
  • Block Party: Fridays from 1-4 pm. Come build with us! All ages.
  • Where Is Elvis? Come in each week to read the clue and find where our summer mascot, Elvis the Cow, is.

  • All-Ages Pokémon Game Days: June 16 and July 21, noon to 5 p.m.
  • Game Days for Aged 9-13: It’s your very own game day with video games, board games, videos, giveaways and snacks. June 8 and August 17 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Events for Aged 12-18

  • Book Buddies: Sign up to be a Big Buddy & read with a partner who has just learned to read. You will meet 45 minutes/week for 6 weeks on your own schedule.
  • Summer Volunteers: Check in summer reading participants, assist with programs, or shelve books. Shifts available in 1-2 hour time slots.
  • Teen Game Nights: June 8 and June 15, July 20, Aug 13, 15 and 17, 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. RSVP to to gamenight@leandertx.gov(link sends e-mail)

Reading Programs

Keep up your reading skills over the summer by checking out some of these programs:

  • Book Buddies: New & reluctant readers are paired up with a teen for 6 weeks. The teams read together for 45 minutes each session and meet on their own schedule. Ask for applications at youthservices@leandertx.gov(link sends e-mail).
  • Bow Wow Reading Dog: Read with our certified reading dogs. Don't paws, and embark on this unique opportunity.

All events are free & open to the public, and you do not have to live in Leander or have an LPL card to participate. So get yer read on!
