Leander ISD Bolsters Filtering Out Bad Stuff On District Devices

District's Information Technology Services department has begun implementing 'remote content filtering system' on district-owned devices.

LEANDER, TX — Leander ISD has implemented fortified steps to filter out inappropriate and unsafe content for students via district-owned Internet-accessing devices, officials announced.

The district's Information Technology Services department has begun implementing a so-called "remote content filtering system" on district devices to ensure they are filtered off-campus just as thoroughly as they are scrubbed on campus, officials said.

The efforts are in compliance with the Children's Internet Protection Act. In addition to blocking out potentially harmful material, the system also blocks some social networking sites and movie/music websites such as Netflix or Pandora, as outlined in the district's Internet filtering FAQ.

"The remote filter update will occur seamlessly when the student device is powered on and attached to the Leander ISD network," district officials said. "Once the filtering program is installed on a student’s machine, the device will be filtered off campus just as it is currently while on campus. The process may take a few weeks to fully deploy. LISD has been piloting the filter at a high school campuses since October in an effort to partner with teachers and students to minimize disruption and ensure access to material needed for learning."
