Leander ISD Delays Opening By Two Hours Due To Icy Roads

Sub-freezing temperatures create ice patches on several roads, prompting delay to allow parents plenty of time to safely transport kids.

LEANDER, TX — Icy road conditions have prompted Leander ISD officials to delay the work day by two hours on Wednesday to allow parents enough time to transport their children to school safely.

"Due to inclement weather, all offices and schools will open late Jan. 3, 2018, at 10 a.m.," officials wrote on Twitter. "This should allow for ice to melt. However, use your best judgment and contact your supervisor if your route to work is unsafe. We expect to see all students Jan. 4, 2018, as planned."

Another nearby school district, the Lago Vista ISD, also implemented a two-hour delay in an abundance of caution. There, Elementary and Intermediate teaching staff are being asked to report at 9:30 am., and students by 9:45 a.m.

The area has been met with below-freezing conditions since about Sunday at 5 p.m., a cold front that continued through Tuesday with temperatures dipping below 30 degrees. Throughout the day, emergency workers had to report to the scenes of various accidents caused by icy roadways.

Officials urge motorists to slow down as they drive while keeping a safe distance with cars in front of them. Efforts were made throughout Tuesday well into the evening to treat roads with de-icing agents to ensure safer travel.
