Leander ISD Educator Visits White House As Teacher Ambassador

LEANDER, TX -- A Leander ISD teacher visited the White House this week as part of an event celebrating educators.

Jose Rodríguez, an English as a Second Language teacher at Pleasant Hill Elementary, was chosen as a teacher ambassador to attend the event, according to a report in the HIll Country News. In honor of Teacher Appreciation Week, the White House honors teachers with the National Teacher of the Year initiative. Every year, each state submits the cream of the crop among their teaching ranks.

“The nice thing about it is that the teachers are selected by their peers,” Rodríguez told Hill Country News. “Each campus selects a teacher and the teacher competes with all other teachers across the district. ”

Rodriguez has been an educator for more than 20 years, including at Leander ISD since 2010. He's taught dual language learning classes at Pleasant Hill, Whitestone, Grandview Hills, Cox and Knowles elementary schools.

Even after 20-years plus of teaching, Rodriguez conveyed fresh enthusiasm in conveying his role to the newspaper: “It’s a very proud moment to be a teacher and be part of an effort on the education of the nation’s future,” Rodríguez said. “I’ve been very fortunate to work in this district."
