Leander ISD To Name Newest Elementary School After Longtime Educator Monta Akin
The school honors former assistant superintendent of instructional services who retired in December 2015 after 40-plus years of service.

LEANDER, TX — The Leander ISD board of trustees recently voted to name the districts 26th elementary school after Monta Akin, who retired in December 2015 after more than 40 years of service at the school district.
The new school will be located across from Stiles Middle School at the corner of Ronald Reagan Boulevard and Journey Parkway. Trusteees voted to name the new school in Akin's honor at their Feb. 2 meeting.
“Looking at the history of this district, it is impossible to overstate Monta's influence,” LISD Board President Will Streit said in a prepared statement. “She played a pivotal role in transforming LISD from a poor-performing district in the late 1970s to one of academic excellence today.”

Akin was formerly the assistant superintendent of instructional services before her retirement. Akin was instrumental in implementing the district’s continuous improvement culture and guiding documents, working closely with the district’s longtime superintendent, Tom Glenn, according to district officials.
Before serving in the assistant superintendent role, Akin was a teacher, a reading specialist and a curriculum director.
