Leander ISD Opts To Re-Open Wednesday Amid Winter Storm

Move comes as other school districts take a wait-and-see attitude centered on weather before determining to re-open for business.

LEANDER, TX — Leander ISD officials have opted to re-open schools on Wednesday after having closed on Tuesday amid a frigid winter storm.

Multiple school districts opted to close down on Tuesday as a winter storm blasted into the region, bringing with it sub-freezing temperatures resulting in icy roads. But with weather steadily warming up, some school districts have opted to re-open for business on Wednesday.

Leander ISD is one such school district: "Leander ISD will operate on a NORMAL schedule Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2018," officials wrote on Twitter. "Buses will run on time and all athletics and after-school activities will go on as scheduled. We look forward to welcoming students to school for a great day of learning."

Parents (and all motorists) are urged to slow down and keep a safe distance with the car in front of them given the possibility of ice on roadways. For a list of street closures, visit DriveTexas.org.

While the warming trend will culminate by Thursday when temps will potentially reach the upper 50s, we're not out of the frigid woods yet. Freezing temperatures are expected late Wednesday. Texas Department of Transportation crews treated major roadways (mainly Interstate 35) to mitigate ice formation as early as Sunday, which likely diminished traffic collisions, but drivers should still be vigilant due to patches of lingering ice on the road.
