Leander Kids Exposed To Banned Content Via School-Issued Laptops

District spokesman blames Google's 'Safe Search' filter for not blocking all bad stuff, then advises parents to talk to their children.

LEANDER, TX — Leander ISD officials recently revealed that students were able to circumvent filters meant to block inappropriate content on school-issued laptops.

District officials learned of the breach after a parent of a student at Cedar Park Middle School reported finding inappropriate material during a search of the child's laptop, KXAN reported. In response, school officials assured security filters were in place, blaming flaws in the "Safe Search" filter provided by Google that allowed the objectionable content to get through, according to the report.

"We have a web filter, we have Google Safe Search and we have tools that monitor our actual hardware and devices," district spokesman Corey Ryan told the news station. "Our filter is still working and in place and did what it was supposed to be doing, Safe Search was still in place. These were just images that got through that were inappropriate, so we reported those to Google."
