Leander ISD Selects New Superintendent (Updated)

LEANDER, TX — The Leander ISD board of trustees named Bruce Gearing as the district's new superintendent.

In that role, Gearing will lead the fast-growth district serving more than 40,100 students across 43 schools, officials said. The 2019 Region 13 Superintendent of the Year, Gearing has served as the Dripping Springs ISD superintendent since February 2012, according to a press advisory. Leander ISD officials noted that during his tenure there, he oversaw a fast-growth district, growing by approximately 50 percent, while supporting students with state and national success in academics, arts and athletics.

State law requires a 21-day waiting period following the naming of a lone finalist, meaning the Board will vote on the contract for Gearing to begin his new role in mid-August. Chief of Staff Matt Smith will serve as the acting superintendent in the meantime, officials said.

Gearing will join Leander ISD after Dan Troxell officials steps down to take a job as deputy executive director at the Texas Association of School Boards. Troxell’s last day as superintendent is July 31.

LEANDER, TX — Leander ISD officials will reveal their new superintendent at the Thursday eveing specially called community meeting, officials said.

The sole finalist for the job was scheduled to be identified at a 6 p.m. meeting in the Support Services Complex board room located at 1900 Cougar Country Drive in Leander. The public is invited to attend, officials said.

The new leader is set to replace Dan Troxell, whose last day at the helm is July 31. Troxell stepped down to accept a position as deputy executive director for the Texas Association of School Boards, a non-profit with a charge of representing and training school board members throughout Texas.

Troxell has held the superintendent's position for less than three years after accepting the position in August 2016. Patch will update this story when the new superintendent is named.
