Thanksgiving 2017: What Stores Are Open, Closed In Austin Area

Some grocery stores will operate on a limited schedule while some retail outlets will close entirely or stay open abbreviated hours.

AUSTIN, TX — Every year, shoppers make a mad dash for the store on Thanksgiving Day for that missing ingredient to their holiday feast, only to arrive to see the business closed. Every year, we list area closures a few days ahead to save harried consumers such frustrations.

And so, we do this again this year. Make sure you have everything you need prior to Thanksgiving Day, as many stores will be closed early in order to give employees a free day to celebrate with their own families.

With rare exceptions, some stores will remain open. Randall's will be open on Thanksgiving Day, implementing full holiday closure only on Christmas Day. HEB stores will be open only from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day while Whole Foods Market will operate on a holiday schedule running from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Most Sprouts Farmers Market grocery stores are open Thanksgiving Day. The city's two Wheatsville Co-op locations will be open during regular hours on Wednesday, Nov. 22, from 7:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. and on Thanksgiving Day from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The stores are located at 3101 Guadalupe St. and 4001 S. Lamar Blvd.

Hard-core shoppers, take note: The Domain and The Domain Northside will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, although select stores will remain open. Further north, Round Rock Premium Outlets will open at 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day and close at 10 p.m. on Black Friday. Barton Creek Square will open at 6 p.m. Thanksgiving Day, close at 1 a.m. then reopen at 6 a.m. and close at 10 p.m. on Black Friday.

Popular Target and Walmart will operate on a shortened schedule too, 6 p.m. to 12 a.m. for the former and returning to its 24-hour schedule at 6 p.m. Thursday. CVS, the drug store chain, isn't everyone's first choice for Thanksgiving Day supplies, but they do offer food items there. The chain boasts of its 24/7 service, and its website indicates that MinuteClinic locations throughout Texas will remain open on Thursday (for pharmaceutical needs, which might also be needed to be filled on Thanksgiving Day).

A website called Best Black Friday has helpfully compiled a list of stores that remaining open on Thanksgiving. Some of these stores will run on a shortened schedule on Thursday, while others are scheduled to remain open until Black Friday.

Black Friday, as you probably know, is the name given to the day after Thanksgiving. It derives its name from the profits gained from stores hoping to remain in the black for the year, much of those gains coming on the day after Thanksgiving alone.
