WilCo Increases Tax Exemptions For Elderly, Disabled
The exemption for those over 65 and disabled increased by $5K, for the elderly by $30K and for disabled homeowners by $20K.
WILLIAMSON COUNTY, TX — The Williamson County Commissioners Court increased the property tax exemptions for the disabled and elderly, officials announced on Wednesday.
The exemption for those over the age of 65 and disabled was increased by $5,000, for the elderly by $30,000 and for homeowners who are disabled by $20,000.
A tax exemption is the ability to reduce the taxable value of property for the purposes of calculating taxes for the taxing entity granting that exemption, county officials explained. For example, a residence homestead valued at $200,000 with an Over 65 exemption would calculate taxes on the new value of $170,000 rather than $175,000.

The increase in the tax exemptions will affect the 2020 tax year as tax statements already have been sent for tax year 2019, officials added.
“I am pleased to have the support of the commissioners court in increasing the exemption amount for residential property owners over 65 and for disabled persons," Precinct 2 Commissioner Cynthia Long said in a prepared statement. "It’s the right thing to do for these taxpayers."

Added Long's Precinct 3 counterpart Valerie Covey: “I support this item because it will be significant to these individuals. We have an ever-growing population of property owners over 65, and this can lessen their property tax burden from the county.”
