📰 News we're reading

1. Rotary: Rotarians participate in reading event at Runyan Elementary (yourconroenews.com) — Rotary Club of Conroe members recently visited Runyan Elementary to read in costume and spark students' interest in history and reading. They also helped present America250 lessons to Magnolia ISD and Willis ISD students, while local Interact clubs plan service projects and support Rotary's global polio eradication work that still affects children abroad.

2. Montgomery County slows justice center timeline after workshop (communityimpact.com) — Montgomery County leaders are slowing down plans for a new justice center in downtown Conroe, saying they need a clearer picture of long-term courtroom, parking, and security needs before asking voters to approve funding. Commissioners are exploring a multi-story courthouse on the previously selected Conroe site that could eventually house up to 35–42 courtrooms, with more workshops expected later this year.

3. Defendant Dies by Suicide Outside Conroe Courthouse Before Sentencing (news-usa.today) — Downtown Conroe residents and courthouse users saw West Phillips Street and the Lee G. Alworth Building briefly closed Friday morning after a 74-year-old defendant died by apparent suicide on the courthouse steps. Authorities say there is no ongoing public threat, but the incident adds to recent security concerns as county leaders weigh plans for a new, larger courthouse complex in Conroe.

4. Missing 17-year-old Lily Brother last seen at Conroe high school, police say (khou.com) — Conroe ISD police are asking Conroe-area residents to help locate 17-year-old Lily Jeune Brother, last seen Friday morning at Booker T. Washington High School with a skateboard and dark gray backpack. Anyone with information is urged to call Conroe ISD Police, and the piece also explains practical steps families should take immediately when a loved one goes missing.

5. How people are fighting back against Flock cameras (mashable.com) — Conroe residents are part of a growing national pushback against Flock license plate cameras, with local resident James Fletes gathering over 1,200 signatures to ask the city to cancel its contract. The council ultimately kept the program, but the story shows how communities like Conroe are using petitions, public meetings, and records requests to question how police surveillance data is used and shared.
