Conroe Approves Annexation Of Four Parcels With 3-2 Vote

Conroe Mayor Toby Powell critical of forced annexation by city.

CONROE, TX — The Conroe City Council narrowly approved the annexation of eight tracts of land that will bring an additional 4,000 residents into the city limits.

The annexation passed 3-2 and involves the direct annexation of four tracts, which all take effect on or before Jan. 2.

However, the remaining four tracts will be added to the city’s annexation plan and won’t be added immediately, the Houston Chronicle reported.

Nonetheless, some were not happy including Conroe Mayor Toby Powell, who was critical of the annexation plans in remarks he made earlier this year.

"First, I want to say that when I ran for mayor, I said that I would never support any forced annexation as long as I was your mayor," Powell read from a prepared statement in October. "I still feel the same way and I am totally against this proposed annexation."

Conroe has 82,000 residents and in May, was listed by the U.S. Census Bureau as one of the fastest growing cities in the US, the Chronicle reported.

Meanwhile, the direct annexation parcels include White Oak Ranch, Lake Lorraine, Pine Lake, Saddle and Surry, and a cluster of other businesses nearby, and the areas falling under the annexation plan include Riverbrook, Carriage Hills, Lakewood Estate, and Lake Conroe Village, according to the Conroe Courier.
