Conroe Man Arrested After Stealing Several Cars, Committing Armed Robbery

Conroe man tried to run from sheriff's deputies, was tased and arrested with a stolen car, handgun and methamphetamine.

CONROE, TX — A Conroe man is in the Montgomery County Jail and facing a host of felony charges after he allegedly committed a string of crimes in a two-day period.

Gene Lee Denton, 33, was arrested after he was spotted in a stolen car on Jan. 27, a day after he’d evaded police the day before for assaulting a man and stealing his car.

According to a press release, sheriff’s deputies initially responded to the intersection of State Highway 105 and Security Forest Drive on Jan. 26, after a man told investigators his car had been stolen and that he’d actually seen the man driving his car near the intersection of State Highway 105 and Security Forest Drive.

The man told investigators that when he walked over to his car, the man took off in his car, driving west on State Highway 105.

Deputies who were responding to the 911 call saw the car and chased it until the man, identified as Denton, ran off into the woods and was able to escape.

During their investigation, deputies learned Denton had been involved in an aggravated robbery earlier that day and had stolen another car previous to the 911 call.

On Jan. 27, deputies received a tip that Denton was seen driving a stolen car in the 1000 block of Security Forest Drive.

When Denton saw the deputies, he tried to run and was tased and arrested.

Investigators said Denton was carrying a .22-caliber pistol and an unknown amount of methamphetamine.

He was taken to the county jail where he was changed with a string of felony charges, including a felon in possession of a firearm, possession of a controlled substance, aggravaged robbery and felony evading arrest.

His bond is set in excess of $100,000.
