Conroe Woman Suing HOA For Causing Sinkhole

Lake Conroe resident Sue Horne claims HOA failed to stop the damage to her home.

LAKE CONROE, TX — A sinkhole would be cause for alarm anywhere there are homes, and that is certainly the case in Lake Conroe where a woman has filed a lawsuit against the Grand Harbor Property Owner Association.

Adjacent to the home that Sue Horne has lived in since 2002 is an ever-expanding abyss that she fears will eventually send her home sliding into Lake Conroe. The issues began in 2015, when Horne’s pool line ruptured, which caused her deck and outdoor kitchen to begin sinking.

She contacted the Grand Harbor HOA who found that the 24-inch waterline connected to her property on the easement next to her home had burst, KTRK reported.

Horne said a crew of ditch diggers with a backhoe showed up, and ripped out the 24-inch line, replacing it with a larger 36-inch line, the Houston Chronicle reported.

A month later, the ground around her home began to give way, revealing an abyss that is cordoned off with orange plastic fencing.

Horne, who told the Chronicle nothing was being done to mitigate the situation or to stop the damage, filed her suit against the Grand Harbor Property Owner Association and a Harris County man who owns the vacant lot next door, and is seeking $200,000 to $500,000.

Horne said she is not only fearful of losing her home — valued at $600,000 — that she has lived in for 15 years, but is afraid a child or animal may fall in and become injured or killed.
