Montgomery County School Districts Plan Return After Labor Day

Montgomery County Schools are among the first school districts in the Houston area to return for the 2017-18 school year

CONROE, TX — Students in the Conroe Independent School District and the Willis Independent School District will be among the first to make their return to the classroom on Sept. 5.

Montgomery County was among the hardest areas of the Greater Houston area and saw about 1,100 residents displaced by the floods that resulted from Hurricane Harvey.

Montgomery ISD and Magnolia ISD will also be starting their school year after the Labor Day Weekend.

Mike Morath, commissioner for the Texas Education Agency, said school that start after Sept. 11 or later will need to apply for a waiver.

“The health, safety and welfare of the students, teachers, and staff of these affected school districts and charter schools is my priority,” Morath said in his memorandum. “While these additional days may not resolve all issues, it is my hope that this additional time will allow school districts and charter schools to address and remediate the damage and reopen by Monday, Sept. 11, 2017.”
