Montgomery HS Awarded Best Communities For Music Education Honor

The NAMM Foundation granted Montgomery the designation for its commitment to music as part of a well-rounded education.

MONTGOMERY, TX — The Montgomery High School music department was named to the 2021 Best Communities for Music Education list by the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation.

"It is an honor for our MHS music department to be recognized with this award,” Montgomery High School choir director Heather Orr said in a press release. “Involvement in choir and band are extremely important to developing the whole child. Our music programs have great kids, incredible parents, and we are fortunate to have an amazing administration. I am just thrilled about their unending support and dedication to the music programs."

According to the NAMM Foundation website, the designation, which is in its 22nd year, is given to districts for their “support and commitment to music education and efforts to assure access to music for all students as part of a well-rounded education.”

As part of the application process, Montgomery High School representatives filled out a detailed survey regarding program funding, graduation requirements, participation, instruction time, facilities and support for the school and community music programs. Application responses were verified with school administrators and reviewed by the Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.

“This program has shown me how to go above and beyond in all that I do,” Montgomery senior Lydia Wilson said in the release. “We could easily just stop at being ‘great,’ but we’ve always had the mindset that we can constantly do better in all that we do, so I’ve learned that and implemented it in life outside of choir.”
