Promise Scholarship Helps Students Pay It Forward

HOUSTON, TX – The Lone Star College Promise Scholarships not only help students advance their education by reducing financial barriers to college, but also benefit the local community in a new and inventive way.

“Students who receive a Lone Star College Promise Scholarship are required to participate in a minimum of 15 hours of community service,” said Dr. Alicia B. Harvey-Smith, LSC executive vice chancellor Academic & Student Affairs. “The service these students perform in the community not only helps those in need, but also teaches our students the importance of giving back.”

LSC Promise Scholarship recipients recently visited the Montgomery County Food Bank where they assisted in preparing 6,600 pounds of meat along with 5,250 pounds of produce and 1,500 pounds of non-perishable items.

The Montgomery County Food Bank serves an average of 35,000 individuals each month.

The LSC Promise is a scholarship and community service program that provides two years of “last-dollar” money that can be used at any Lone Star College location.

Students who apply are given assistance to navigate and complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

The LSC Promise then funds the balance of tuition and mandatory fees due for students who still demonstrate financial need.

The scholarship is partially funded by the Lone Star College Foundation. “Lone Star College created this program to provide more opportunity for students to pursue and complete their higher education and break down the barriers to earning a college degree,” said Nicole Robinson Gauthier, CFRE, LSC Foundation executive director. “This scholarship is not a loan and does not have to be paid back.”
