📰 News we're reading

1. Golf cart rules in Corpus Christi: Where you can and can't drive them (kztv10.com) — If you drive a golf cart in Corpus Christi, you're generally limited to streets 35 mph or under and within one mile of where it's parked, unless you live in a planned HOA neighborhood. A Corpus Christi police captain breaks down how those rules applied to a Southside school drop-off video and why places like Mustang Island and Port Aransas are different.

2. One person killed in Montebello Drive fire (kiiitv.com) — A deadly house fire on Montebello Drive in Southside Corpus Christi claimed one person's life Wednesday morning, despite firefighters knocking down the blaze in about 15 minutes. Officials say working smoke alarms alerted the surviving resident and limited damage, and they're urging neighbors to check and replace older detectors to stay protected.

3. Corpus Christi neighbor says vacant home next door has become a hotbed for squatters and thieves (kristv.com) — A longtime Corpus Christi resident on Green Grove Drive says a vacant house next door has drawn squatters, theft, and rodents, and that her calls to code enforcement haven't fixed the problem. District 2 Councilwoman Sylvia Campos visited the property, acknowledged a citywide shortage of cleanup funds, and pledged to push for more resources and raise this case during upcoming budget talks.

4. Judge orders City of Corpus Christi not to pay $1.5M to Elevate QOF (kiiitv.com) — Corpus Christi's city government has been temporarily barred from paying a disputed $1.5 million incentive to Elevate QOF while multiple lawsuits play out in court. A Nueces County temporary restraining order and an earlier district court order have effectively frozen the funds until the City Council authorizes any payment and a September injunction hearing is held.

5. Lake Corpus Christi is 91% full again, but residents warn of hidden dangers beneath the surface (kristv.com) — Lake Corpus Christi is now more than 91% full, but residents who live along the shoreline say thick vegetation that grew during low-water months is now hidden below the surface and creating serious safety risks. They're worried about drowning hazards, boat navigation problems, and impacts on aquatic life, and are urging Corpus Christi officials to take long-term action after more than a year without a clear plan.
