TxDOT is cutting speeds to 50 mph near Port Aransas starting Aug. 25 and is asking the public, including Corpus Christi residents, to email safety suggestions that will help shape an upcoming town hall and long-term widening plans.
2. Abandoned home next to Corpus Christi woman's house set for demolition after KRIS 6 report (kristv.com) — Neighbors on Green Grove Drive in Corpus Christi are finally seeing action after years of problems with an abandoned home next door, as city officials move toward demolition and police have boarded it up. After a resident contacted KRIS 6, the property owner relinquished rights, and the case is headed to a city board this November to authorize tearing it down.
3. Man dies in police custody after allegedly stabbing his mother (news4sanantonio.com subscription) — Corpus Christi police say a man died in custody after allegedly stabbing his mother Friday on Yorktown Boulevard, leaving her hospitalized in stable condition. Neighbors reportedly detained the suspect before officers arrived, and investigators are now examining whether drugs or mental health issues contributed while awaiting a formal cause of death.
4. Heavy police presence reported at Allure apartment complex (kiiitv.com) — Corpus Christi police responded Saturday evening to a reported shooting at the Allure apartment complex on Everhart Road, where one person was shot in the leg and another was detained. Officers remained on scene for about an hour as 3NEWS gathered details, and authorities say this is still an active, developing investigation with more information to come.
5. Dozens of strangers honor Navy veteran David Eugene Garrett at Coastal Bend funeral (kristv.com) — In Corpus Christi, dozens of Coastal Bend residents came together at a veterans cemetery to ensure Navy veteran David Eugene Garrett was not buried alone. Community members, many who never knew him, honored his Vietnam-era service and medals, showing how locals step up to stand in for family when a veteran has no known next of kin.
