Here are the top stories in Dallas today:
- On Tuesday, Dallas County broke ground on an affordable housing project in the heart of North Oak Cliff, where the former Beckley Avenue branch courthouse once stood. The county-owned land is being leased at no cost to a non-profit developer that will build 230 new units, most of them reserved for families of four making no more than $50,000 a year. Similar affordable housing developments are being planned in other parts of Dallas, many of them near DART rail stations. (NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth)
- A Dallas man is currently in police custody for an alleged deed fraud scheme involving over $1.6 million in stolen property. William Baldridge, 56, allegedly stole 20 properties in three counties through fraudulent deed transfers, then sold 17 of them. He is held in the Dallas County jail on two felony theft charges and a harassment charge, with bails totaling $501,000. (WFAA.com)
- After a June conviction of conspiracy and bribery, Dallas real estate developer Ruel Hamilton was sentenced yesterday to eight years in prison for bribing former Dallas City Council members Carolyn Davis and Dwaine Caraway. (CBS Dallas / Fort Worth)
- Mark Cuban and three other Dallas-Fort Worth business tycoons — John Goff, Morton Meyerson, and Randall Stephenson — were inducted into the Texas Business Hall of Fame during a recent dinner at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas. (CultureMap Dallas)
- In spring 2022, Violet Crown, an Austin-based indie-theater chain, will open in the former Magnolia Theatre in West Village, which closed earlier this year due to COVID-19. (CultureMap Dallas)
