The Dallas Police Department released body worn camera footage of an officer-involved shooting that occurred in the 4100 block of Mockingbird Ln. on April 19.

The department released a press release and posted the video to social media on Tuesday. Major Nathan Swyers of the Criminal Investigations Group narrated the events shown in the footage.

"This marks the eighth officer-involved shooting for the Dallas Police Department in 2026," Swyers said. "The details you're about to hear are based on the preliminary investigation and may change as more information is confirmed."

The incident began, Swyers said, around 2 a.m. when an officer initiated a traffic stop on a black, 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee operating without headlights in the 4800 block of Preston Rd.

According to Swyers, the vehicle continued into Highland Park before stopping on Mockingbird Ln. "As the officer marked out on the traffic stop, the front seat passenger, later identified as Jeremy Mays, exited the vehicle and approached the officer."

Swyers continued, "Mays began speaking incoherently and made an unsolicited statement that he did not have any weapons. As the officer attempted to guide Mays out of the roadway, Mays suddenly assaulted the officer, striking him multiple times and knocking him to the ground."

After being charged again, Swyers said, the officer retreated westbound on Mockingbird. "During the pursuit, the officer fired two rounds, striking Mays once in the abdomen," Swyers said. "Mays collapsed in the roadway."

Nearby Highland Park officers heard the shots and responded to the scene. Mays was taken into custody at the scene. The driver of the vehicle fled but was later apprehended.
