After mosquito samples in Dallas tested positive for the West Nile Virus, the city announced it schedule a mosquito control spraying for the weekend.
The city announced the mosquito control measure in a Friday press release. According to the release, the area generally bounded by 13800 Garden Grove Dr., Dorothy Nell Dr. on the north, Cedar Bluff Ln. on the west, Coltview Place on the east, and CF Hawn Freeway on the south.
The spraying will take place on May 9-10 between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.
While the United States Environmental Protection Agency approves the insecticide used for treatment, residents in the above areas should avoid contact with the spray by staying indoors during these hours.
People inside a vehicle while trucks are actively spraying should remain in their vehicles with the windows up and the air conditioner on until the trucks pass through and the spray is no longer visible.
Anyone outside during the scheduled spraying time should be on the alert for the trucks and refrain from following them. Residents who come into contact with the spray are advised to wash the affected area thoroughly with soap and water.
Dallas residents are urged to take precautions against mosquito bites by reducing outdoor activity during the evening and nighttime hours. Residents who are outside during those times should cover their arms and legs and also use a mosquito repellent.
Additionally, residents should eliminate standing water to help prevent mosquito breeding and the spread of West Nile Virus. Breeding places for mosquitos include unmaintained swimming pools, stagnant ponds, pet watering dishes, birdbaths, potted plants, old tires, empty containers, toys, and clogged rain gutters.
Eliminating standing water promptly is important as mosquitos can grow from egg to adult in as little as a week. Dallas residents may receive mosquito dunks (which kill larvae) at Code Compliance Services District Offices while supplies last.
