Dallas Police Honor Fallen Officer With Ceremonial Street Topper

The Dallas Police Department honored a fallen officer with a ceremonial street topper at eastbound I-635 Service R. and Skillman St.

The department posted to social media about the ceremony on Friday afternoon. According to the post, the department honored Senior Corporal Bill "Doughboy" Daugherty, who died on Aug. 10, 1992 while on duty.

A member of the Traffic Unit, Daugherty was working radar near the 9800 block of LBJ Freeway, also known as I-635, while riding his motorcycle.

Daugherty initiated a routine traffic stop of a speeding vehicle, and was thrown from his motorcycle as he merged onto the freeway from the shoulder.

An uneven surface between the shoulder and the freeway from previous construction work was to blame. Daugherty was transported to the hospital, but ultimately passed from his injuries.

During his tenure with DPD, Daugherty received 40 commendations, a Life Saving Bar, and was Officer of the Month in February 1979.

Members of the command staff, other members of the department, and members of Daugherty's family attended the unveiling.
