The City of Dallas is hosting a flag raising ceremony and resource fair at Dallas City Hall Plaza to kick off Pride month on Friday.

The city put out a press release with the event details on Wednesday. According to the release, the city's rainbow Pride flag will fly above city buildings throughout the month of June.

On Friday, May 29, starting at 5 p.m., city leaders and partners will gather at Dallas City Hall Plaza (1500 Marilla St.) for the flag raising. Additionally, city partners will illuminate the downtown skyline with multi-colored lights beginning that evening.

In attendance at the event will be council members Chad West and Laura Cadena, as well as representatives from City of Dallas LGBT Employees for Pride of Dallas, Dallas Police Department, Dallas Arboretum, Dallas Mavericks, Dallas Wings, Texas Latino Pride, Abounding Prosperity, LGBT Task Force, and MMIW TX Rematriate.

In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be relocated to the Flag Room located at Dallas City Hall 6FN.

According to Encyclopedia Britannica, Pride Month is celebrated in June to mark the significance of the Stonewall riots in New York City to the LBGTQ rights movement.

The rainbow Pride Flag was created in 1978 by the San Fransisco activist Gilbert Baker. The colors are supposed to represent pride and unity of all the communities under the LGBTQ umbrella.
