Dallas Police Release Footage of May Escape from Custody Incident

The Dallas Police Department just released body cam footage and more information about an escape from custody incident that occurred on May 30.

The department posted the video briefing to social media on Thursday. According to the briefing, the incident occurred near I-35 and Illinois Ave.

DPD officers Ibrahim Kante and Kenneth Harper conducted a traffic stop for a registration violation in the 2300 block of south Marsalis Ave. at approximately 5:35 p.m.

According to the briefing, the traffic stop resulted in the arrest of 37-year-old Stacey Huffman for driving while license invalid, possession of a controlled substance, and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Kante handcuffed Huffman and placed him in the rear seat of the squad car so the officers could complete their investigation. After being placed in the squad car, Huffman managed to remove his left hand from the handcuffs and concealed his hands behind his body.

As the officers began driving to jail, Huffman attempted to open the locked rear door of the squad car and removed his seat belt. At approximately, 6:10 p.m., the officers stopped the squad car on northbound I-35 near Illinois Ave and exited the vehicle to restrain Huffman.

After both officers got out of the vehicle, Huffman climbed into the driver's seat and drove away. As this happened, Harper entered the backseat of the vehicle. Harper deployed his Taser, but it was not effective.

Harper then drew his duty weapon and struck Huffman on the side of the head with it. Huffman continued to drive erratically, which caused Harper to be violently thrown across the backseat.

After driving approximately 1,000 feet, Huffman opened the driver side door and exited the moving car. Harper was able to regain control of the vehicle and avoid a collision.

Huffman was rendered unconscious and taken into custody. Both he and Harper were transported to a local hospital. Harper was treated and released, but Huffman remains hospitalized.

The incident is being investigated by the DPD Special Investigations Unit. The Dallas County District Attorney's Office and the Office of Community Police Oversight have been notified.
