Help 'Calm the Canines' with Dallas Animal Services This July 4 Weekend

Provide comfort to shelter pets during one of the loudest nights of the year.

It is no secret that the Fourth of July holiday and its customary fireworks displays put stress on pets throughout the community.

According to this press release, that's exactly why Dallas Animal Services hosts its "Calming the Canines" volunteer event every year.

On Saturday, July 4, from 9-11 p.m., community members are invited to come by the shelter and provide comfort to the animals on one of the loudest nights of the year.

During the event, volunteers and visitors can spend quiet time with shelter dogs during the fireworks. Participants can bring a favorite book, a soothing instrument, or just a chair or blanket.

DAS Assistant Director Victoria Chittam Bennett said, "Many shelter dogs experience stress and anxiety during fireworks. Having caring community members present to provide comfort can make a meaningful difference in helping them feel safe."

Before the fireworks begin, DAS will kick off the holiday weekend with its First Friday's event on July 3 from 5-8 p.m. The event will feature giveaways, activities, and opportunities to meet adoptable dogs and cats. And residents don't need to want to adopt to attend—they can just feel like hanging out with shelter pets for a bit.
