Dallas Police Honor Officers Killed in 2016 Attack

On Thursday, the Dallas Police Department held a remembrance ceremony for the five officers killed in an ambush a decade ago.

The shooting occurred on July 7, 2016, during a Black Lives Matter protest. A 25-year-old military veteran named Micah Johnson killed four Dallas police officers and one DART officer in an attack specifically targeting law enforcement. Multiple people suffered injuries during the attack.

Dallas Mayor Eric L. Johnson said, "This evening we solemnly remember four Dallas police officers ... and one DART police officer ... who were murdered in a targeted ambush on this very day 10 years ago."

He said that the officers displayed courage and selflessness in going to work every day to protect the citizens of Dallas.

"And they were targeted for specifically for their willingness to do that," Johnson said. "But these men were not only police officers. They were husbands, fathers, sons, and friends who were taken from us far too soon. On this 10th anniversary of that tragic night, I still remember it as though it were yesterday."

Johnson recalled the disbelief and heartbreak of the evening. "But I also remember Dallas's resilience and the immediate outpouring of love and support for the families of these officers," he said. "We showed that Dallas is not defined by tragedy. We're defined by our people, our communities, and our love for one another."

The Fort Worth Police Department posted to social media about the anniversary.

"We pause to remember Michael J. Smith, Michael Krol, Patrick Zamarripa, Brent Thompson, and Lorne Ahrens," the post states. "We also honor the officers who were wounded and the families, friends, and communities forever impacted by that night."
