Buckner Preparatory in Dallas gets new reading space, 500 donated books (cbsnews.com) — Students at Buckner Preparatory in Dallas now have a brand-new reading nook stocked with 500 donated children's books, plus new furniture, all provided through a CBS News Texas community book drive. With many students learning English and facing economic challenges, the space and books aim to boost literacy, while extra donations and $10,000 in funding will extend free book fairs across North Texas.
2. Man Charged With Murder After Fatal Shooting Near Dallas-Lancaster Border (irvingweekly.com) — A 59-year-old man is expected to be charged with murder after a late-night shooting in southeast Dallas near the Lancaster border left a 56-year-old man dead. Dallas police say Donald James allegedly shot Darryl Anderson on Cherry Valley Boulevard; Anderson died at the scene and James, found wounded, remains hospitalized in custody as investigators seek more information.
3. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent defends Trump economy at SMU event (dallasnews.com) — Dallas residents will see national Republican attention this week as Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent visits SMU ahead of a major midterm convention at the American Airlines Center. In a conversation with local developer Ray Washburne, he defended Trump's economic record, addressed high interest and energy prices, and argued Republicans should retain control of Congress to sustain what he calls a "nascent boom."
4. 8 Places to Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in Dallas-Fort Worth (dfwchild.com) — Families in Dallas can choose from several Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations around the region, including a free City of Dallas Siempre Unidos Festival with Aztec dance and bilingual theater. From Trinity River Audubon Center outings to Latinidad at AT&T Performing Arts Center, many events are free or low-cost and run from mid-September through mid-October 2026.
5. No charges for Mesquite officer on video hitting man who died in custody (wfaa.com) — A Dallas County grand jury has declined to indict a Mesquite police officer seen on body camera tackling and hitting 55-year-old Willie Rose, who later died after the confrontation inside Dallas city limits. The medical examiner ruled Rose's death a homicide influenced by health issues, cocaine and the struggle, while his family continues to question the officer's actions and seek legal guidance.
