(Mansfield, TX) – As people age, sometimes things they used to take for granted—particularly those all-important personal connections—can no longer be counted on.

Pam Searcy, 74, and Beth Parker, 79, have both experienced some significant changes in their lives in recent years. In 2023, after 59 years of marriage, Parker found herself all alone. Searcy’s husband of 26 years died seven years ago.

“I stayed in my house for a while, but I was getting depressed,” said Searcy. “It just seemed so empty.

In late 2023, both women made a change that has improved their situations immensely. They moved to Album Mansfield, a 55+ active adult community in Mansfield, Texas.

“I saw Beth for the first time a day or two after I moved in. I was out on my little outside patio and I saw this lady walking by with a little dog. She had just called out to Pepper and I said, ‘Did you just call your dog Pepper?’ she said ‘Yes,’ and I said, ‘Well, my dog is named Pepper too,” said Searcy.

It wasn’t long before Parker and Searcy, Pepper and Pepper were doing pretty much everything together. “What happens a lot is I say, ‘I’m going to the grocery store. Do you need anything?’ or ‘Do you want to go shopping?” commented Parker.

“Not because I necessarily need anything, but because I want to go, I say ‘Sure,’” said Searcy.

The women and their dogs, who happen to be next door neighbors on the first floor, do a lot together at the community itself too. One of their favorite activities is people—and dog— watching.

“We’re on the side of the building with the parking lot, which is also where people walk their dogs. We end up talking about whatever with people who live in the community pretty much every day,” said Searcy.

“We spend a lot of time here doing things with our neighbors. There is one couple in particular up on the third floor that we like to play Dominos with. They recently taught us a new game,” said Parker.

Both Parker and Searcy say that in addition to finding the companionship they so desperately desired, both are also more active than they were when living on their own.

“I exercise or do water aerobics pretty much every day, and I walk all the time. I also like being able to participate in the on-site activities happening throughout the day rather than spending the day sitting in my apartment,” said Parker.

“Just walking from my apartment to the Great Room where people gather several times a day, I get a lot more exercise than I used to when I lived alone in my house,” said Searcy. “Now I don’t really sit on the couch much anymore.”

“I won’t let her,” said Parker, laughing.

“Beth is the one who comes and tells me what we’re going to do,” added Searcy.

Pam Searcy and Beth Parker are good role models not only for their neighbors, but for older adults everywhere. According to the Institute on Aging, companionship promotes better mental and physical health, creates new routines and really just makes life better.
