The first one, set for 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, at the Reby Cary Youth Library featuring excerpts from the one-act children’s opera Frida Kahlo and the Bravest Girl in the World, by composer Joe Illick and librettist Mark Campbell. The opera is based on author/illustrator Laurence Anholt’s book following the real-life story of Marianna Morillo Safa and her friendship with famous painter Frida Kahlo. The story makes an excellent way to end Hispanic Heritage Month.

At 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, at the Northwest Library, FWO GO will perform excerpts from the one-act children’s opera, Stone Soup, also by Illick and Campbell. The piece is based on an age-old story, but with a Texas twist. A hungry, penniless, 13-year-old girl named Sally arrives at the steps of a local General Store in Blessing, Texas, during the Great Depression, and teaches the townspeople the value of sharing and working together. It is the perfect presentation to carry us into the “season of giving.”

Visitors are encouraged to bring snacks, drinks and chairs for the shows, which will be staged in the parking lots and lawns. FWO GO is designed to take opera to people who wouldn’t otherwise attend a formal opera performance downtown.
