In November 2019, the City Council adopted a resolution supporting development of a Vision Zero strategy to eliminate traffic fatalities and severe injuries. To support this effort, the Transportation and Public Works Department initiated a School Zone/Sign Maintenance Program in 2020 to ensure that safety for the most vulnerable roadway users is enhanced, especially as they walk to and from school.

More than 75 campuses (primarily elementary schools) in the City of Fort Worth received updated signs, refreshed pavement markings and preventative maintenance on flashing beacons in 2020. Approximately 60 schools will receive school zone improvements in 2021.

The School Zone/Sign Maintenance Program focuses on improving visibility of the pedestrians and ensuring signs, pavement markings and flashing beacons comply with Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices standards.
