Modern life is all about speed, efficiency and production. We prize multi-tasking. We want to cram as much as possible into every day and every experience.

It’s exhausting.

The Fort Worth Botanic Garden | Botanical Research Institute of Texas encourage guests to slow down and enjoy nature in the garden, without pressure or an agenda.

“So often we meet people who come to the garden and want to see it all,” said Erin Starr White, director of community education. “We understand, but that can mean rushing from place to place. You never get a chance to really take in the experience.”

Instead, White encourages guests to slow down, take their time and appreciate the details. White has created a new program, called the Slow Garden Experience, that will help guests pause, breathe and take in the beauty of one corner of the garden.

Inspired by the Slow Food and Slow Art movements, the Slow Garden Experience invites guests to leave distractions behind and take in the sights, sounds and sensations of the natural world.

“We will focus on one garden at a time – in July, it will be the Cactus Garden,” White said. “We’ll spend time there considering the lines, colors and shapes of these really neat plants, thinking about what they remind us of and the feelings they evoke. We let go of the overwhelm.”

Registration for July’s Slow Garden Experience has closed, but watch for future announcements.

White encouraged everyone to create their own Slow Garden Experience, even if they can’t attend one of the programs. It’s an ideal way to enjoy the garden in the heat of the summer, when rushing through the total 110 acres would be too much, White said.

“Instead, focus on one pocket and spend quality time there,” White suggested. “Get to know that place from different angles. Relax and enjoy the elements.”

The Fort Worth Botanic Garden | Botanic Research Institute of Texas is at 3220 Botanic Garden Blvd.
