The event, which will reoccur the second Saturday of every month, starts at LVTRise, 8201 Calmont Ave., and is the first such walk held in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

TCOM students, faculty and staff are encouraged to join Dr. Maria Crompton and second-year student Kate Russell for a refreshing morning of exercise and fellowship.

“Dr. Crompton and I hope to encourage patients in the community to live a healthy, active lifestyle by doing it together,” Russell said. “Physicians and medical students spend so much time thinking and talking about exercising and nutrition to improve health outcomes, but we want to work with our patients towards these goals as well.

“We hope to connect people in the community with a safe, fun environment to exercise, ask questions and access health care more readily.”

The Walk with a Doc concept is simple — physicians organize walks in their communities and invite their patients, their patients’ families and community members to join them. Walkers will enjoy a refreshing and invigorating walk with Crompton and other health care professionals and medical students, who will provide support to participants and answer questions during the walk.

“The time spent with our patients in the clinic setting is just a small sliver of time out of their day-to-day routines, but it is in those day-to-day routines where health is impacted the greatest,” Crompton said. “Walk with a Doc allows an opportunity to meet folks in the community to encourage healthy practices in a safe and free manner. And as folks regularly start participating, they get more confident in walking, and start to incorporate walking — as well as other healthy habits — into part of that day-to-day routine.”
