Registration is open for the second annual Tunnel to Towers Run and Walk, which unites the community to honor first responders, remember 9/11 and raise funds. The local run, one of dozens scheduled around the nation, will be held at 8 a.m. Oct. 16 at the Shops at Clearfork, 5188 Monahans Ave.

The Tunnel to Towers Run and Walk Series was created to honor the life and death of Stephen Siller, a New York City firefighter who lost his life on Sept. 11, 2001, after strapping on his gear and running through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers. The event honors all who lost their lives that day, and supports first responders and military members who make extraordinary sacrifices in the line of duty.

The local run and walk honors Officer Garret Hull, who was shot and killed Sept. 14, 2018, while attempting to apprehend a group of serial robbers who had victimized numerous people and were a violent threat to the community. During his 17 years in the Fort Worth Police Department, Hull served in specialized tactical units including the Special Response Team, Narcotics Division and Tactical Intelligence Division. Hull is survived by his wife and two daughters.

“The purpose of this race and walk is not only to honor Officer Hull’s sacrifice to this city, but also to shine a light on the tremendous support that Tunnel to Towers provides to those families whose loved ones have chosen a life of service,” said William Hix, a retired FWPD officer who worked with Hull and is now organizing the Tunnel to Towers event in Fort Worth.

Online registration is open through Oct. 13.
