Dallas Animal Services Celebrates Kitten Season with Community Shower
The event will take place on Sunday, March 22, from noon-4 p.m. at 1818 N. Westmoreland Road.
Dallas Animal Services is celebrating kitten season with a Kitten Show on Sunday, march 22, from noon-4 p.m. at 1818 N. Westmoreland Road.
DAS announced the event in a Tuesday press release. According to the release, the event invites residents to learn how they can support young kittens entering the shelter system this spring.
Every spring, kitten season brings a surge of newborns into the world requiring specialized care. Last year between March and October, DAS cared for more than 2,000 kittens, many too young to remain safely in the shelter.

That's why DAS relies on foster caregivers to provide temporary homes where kittens can grow until they are old enough for adoption. The shelter provides all necessary pet supplies and medical care.
"If you've considered fostering or adopting a feline friend, now is a great time with our kitten nursery open from spring through the fall," said Amanda Earl, assistant director of DAS. "The community's help is critical for the health and wellness of the animals in our care. We'd love to help you find the next addition to your family."

The shelter also encourages residents to assess outdoor kittens before intervening, because most are not abandoned. Mother cats routinely leave their litters briefly to search for food. So, unless the kittens appear sick, injured, abandoned for several hours, or in immediate danger, it's best to leave them to the care of their mother.
Residents who do discover a mother cat and her kittens may foster the family with support from DAS.
