According to the Bush Center, Dallas is losing its affordability edge relative to other U.S. cities due to underbuilding combined with rising demand. Dallas has seen low development of new income-restricted housing units in recent years.

An Axios article from earlier this year cites data that shows the average age of the first-time homebuyer in Dallas-Fort Worth in 2025 was 32 years old. That is because that combination of high prices prices, mortgage rates, and the housing shortage are making it harder for people to buy.
