Dallas Crime Rate At Lowest Point Since 1964: Police

DALLAS, TX — Each year, police departments across the country round up the previous year's crime statistics and report them to the FBI for the Uniform Crime Report, and Dallas Police Department is no exception. Data from 2017's round up turned up some good news. Crime citywide dropped to the lowest rate since 1964.

According to Dallas Police, the overall crime rate is down 3.6 percent from 2016, a marked change that brings crime down to a historical low harking back to the days of a much quieter Dallas. The total number of crimes reported in 2017 also reached a remarkable low, matching that of 1968.

Property crimes (theft, burglary and auto theft) dropped 5.1 percent compared to 2016, but still accounted for 80.5 percent of all crime in Dallas.

Homicides also dropped 4.1 percent, and robberies dropped 4.9 percent. Violent crimes like aggravated assault, however, rose 2.9 percent.

Dallas Police remind residents that property crime can be further avoided by following a few simple recommendations. Drivers should always try to park in busy, well-lit areas and make a habit of always locking a car's doors.

Police remind residents to call the police and report any suspicious persons, activities or vehicles at any time.

FBI Uniform Crime Reporting data from 2017 is not yet available, but an estimated 7,919,035 property crimes occurred nationwide in 2016. The FBI estimates a decrease of 1.3 percent in property crime between 2015 and 2016, a trend which hopefully continues into 2017.
