First, today's weather:

Partly cloudy throughout the day. High: 85 Low: 71.

Here are the top stories today in Dallas:

  1. The North Oak Cliff neighborhood has been lauded as "Dallas's best-kept secret," and some locals wish it would have stayed that way. Multi-generational families and affordable rents are being replaced by tourists and luxury apartment buildings. National attention is now on the area as The Guardian's Brianna Holt explores the human costs of gentrification and how the community is trying to stop the trend. (The Guardian)
  2. World Business Chicago is openly positing the Midwest city as an alternative for Dallas businesses. The private-public agency posted a full-page ad in Sunday's Dallas Morning News, citing voting and reproductive rights as well as COVID-19 policies as reasons for companies to consider a move northward. As reporter Alex Macon writes, only time will tell what the policies targeted by Chicago's ad will mean for business in Texas. (D Magazine)
  3. Embrace a sense of hope for the hospitality industry in the upcoming year with CultureMap's master list of fall 2021 Dallas restaurant openings. Well over 50 new establishments will soon be slinging hash (figuratively, for the most part) in the city, including the reopening of power lunch icon Dakota's Steakhouse. Other notables include fast-casual Hawaiian Bros., which plans on opening multiple locations throughout the Metro area, and a new spot from renowned chef Sharon Van Meter, called Beckley 1115. (CultureMap Dallas)
  4. Read how Tito's Vodka is helping to expand a local community farm. The spirits purveyor is working with the Dallas-based nonprofit Restorative Farms to expand the currently one-acre Hatcher Station Training Farm. The team plans to break ground on Wednesday. The efforts are part of Tito's Block to Block program, which works to promote greater access to fresh produce for communities. (Dallas Observer)
  5. A man is expected to recover after being hit by a stray bullet in Uptown Dallas. An officer responded to the sound of gunshots on McKinney Avenue near Worthington Street early Monday morning. The officer apprehended the suspected shooter after a brief chase. (FOX 4 Dallas)
