Dallas to Unveil Rainbow-Painted Steps at Oak Lawn Branch Library

The City of Dallas will unveil rainbow-painted steps at the Oak Lawn Branch Library at a ceremony on Saturday morning.

The city put out a press release with the details. According to the release, the event will take place at 10:30 a.m. on June 27 at the Oak Lawn Branch Library (4100 Cedar Springs Rd.).

The project was developed through community engagement efforts following the removal of the Oak Lawn rainbow crosswalks earlier this year.

The installation reflects community input and celebrates the Oak Lawn community while highlighting the library's role as a welcoming public space.

Dallas City Council Member Paul Ridley, in collaboration, with the Office of Arts and Culture, the City Manager's Office, Dallas Public Library, the LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce Foundation and the Strip on Cedar Springs, will unveil the rainbow-painted steps.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott issued a directive last fall that all Texas counties and cities remove political ideology from public roadways to remain in compliance with federal state guidelines regarding roadway safety.

According to KERA News, the city finally removed the rainbow sidewalk during a scheduled resurfacing of the street. Unlike other large Texas cities, Dallas fought back against the order. Rainbow paintings on private buildings have been one of those resistance tactics.
