Dallas Zoo Welcomes New Baby Giraffe

Dallas' newest, biggest baby is joining the herd at the Dallas Zoo.

DALLAS, TX — Dallas' newest baby is a big one, born at a whopping 5-foot-9 and weighing in at 130 pounds, according to reports. Chrystal the giraffe gave birth to a calf last week, making the announcement Monday.

The baby was born around 11 p.m. on April 25, NBC5 reported.

The delivery lasted about two and a half hours, and the new calf was walking and nursing after about 45 minutes. The calf's sex wasn't reported, but zoo officials will release that info later this week.

Chrystal and her baby are spending time together, bonding before the calf's debut, NBC5 reported.

"Chrystal showed us once again that she's a very attentive mother," said Allison Dean, assistant supervisor of giraffes, in a statement, according to Dallas News. "She's been busy cleaning, nuzzling and nursing her new little one who spends a lot of time eating and even more time napping. It's hard being that cute."
