Former Teacher Living the Good Life in Retirement

The biggest selling points for most people who move into a 55 plus active adult community are all the amenities and the fun activities.

(Fort Worth, Texas) – Less than a week after retiring from a 46-year career as a math teacher and award-winning decathlon coach at Nimitz High School in Irving, Texas, Greg Jackson, 73, made a second major change in his life.

He became one of the first people to move into Album Keller Ranch, which at the time was a brand new 55 plus active adult community about 20 minutes north of Downtown Fort Worth.

“I feel very secure here,” he said. “I have loved it here since I arrived in June of 2021.”

Jackson has a one-bedroom, one-bath apartment with a kitchen and living/dining area on the second floor. “The stairs are right across the hall from me, and I have a garage with storage right across the drive.”

Not only are things convenient at home, everything he needs in life is nearby. “The Post Office is about five minutes away, the Sam’s Club is right across the street, there are several grocery stores ten minutes away. Right after I moved here, they opened some nice little shops nearby. It’s like they’re right on the property,” he said.

Jackson also enjoys spending time at The Parks at Town Center near Keller City Hall, which is just five or ten minutes away depending on traffic. “I walk there every day,” he said. “There are nice, wide concrete sidewalk with ducks in a pond, fountains spewing, people fishing out there every once in a while. It’s just very peaceful.”

Another plus, his three children and their families, which include three grandchildren, all live nearby. “I get to pick up my granddaughter from kindergarten a few days a week. She comes up here and hangs out with me.

“Everything’s good,” he said, adding that he particularly enjoys the peace and quiet at the community after decades of being in the middle of constant activity in a school setting.

The biggest selling points for most people who move into a 55 plus active adult community are all the amenities and the fun activities that are provided for them, such as the pool and fitness center, exercise classes, art classes and social gatherings. For Jackson, what drew him to Album Keller Ranch was more so the peace and quiet, and ability to just be around others his age.

“The people here are very friendly. There are a lot of people I see often in the halls and talk to, and I have liked everyone who has worked in the leasing office,” said Jackson, who added, “We have great maintenance here. Any time I have an issue, I go into the resident portal, I enter it in, and our maintenance guy is ‘Johnny on the spot.’ He takes care of it quickly and efficiently.”

Now rather than having to worry about home maintenance, Jackson has the time to do what he wants to do. Isn’t that what retirement is supposed to be all about?

“I think this is a great place. I really enjoy living here,” Jackson added.
