Jerry Jones Could Be Fined Millions By NFL Commissioner: Report

The fines resulted from two separate battles with Commissioner Roger Goodell over a contract extension and Ezekiel Elliott's suspension.

DALLAS, TX — Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones may come to regret his efforts to derail NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell's contract extension. According to a New York Times report, Goodell intends to fine Jones millions of dollars for actions that were "detrimental to the league."

The potential fine comes after a months-long, public fallout between Goodell and Jones which included a battle over the 2017 suspension of Ezekiel Elliott, a star Cowboys player.

A six-game suspension was handed down for Elliott on August 11, 2017, after reports of domestic abuse surfaced. According to SBNation, Elliott's former girlfriend filed police reports and pursued criminal charges against him. Elliott was never charged with a crime.

A series of appeals put the punishment on hold four separate times, but Elliott backed off his appeals and agreed to serve his suspension on Nov. 15, 2017, SBNation wrote.

In the same month, Jones hired a high-profile lawyer and announced he was prepared to sue the owners on the NFL compensation committee, The Times reported. The committee was working at the time on extending Goodell's contract.

Jones' efforts were unsuccessful and Goodell's contract was extended for five years. He could earn as much as $200 million in that time, The Times reported.

According to the report, Jones will be ordered to repay legal fees the committee racked up while defending itself against him. In addition, Jones will be ordered to repay the NFL for separate legal fees spent defending Elliott's suspension.

The fines will be issued in the coming weeks, The Times reports.
