Retire Your Worries at Highland Springs
After researching continuing care retirement communities, Jerry and Denise Klos chose Highland Springs for its financial value and amenities

Jerry and Denise Klos loved their condo in an Allen, Tex., 55-plus community, but they wanted access to a greater variety of amenities and convenient health care services.
So, when they started exploring their senior living options, Highland Springs, an Erickson Senior Living community in North Dallas, Tex., quickly rose to the top of their list.
"We learned a lot during our vetting process, including how wonderful Highland Springs is from a value-for-your-money point of view," says Jerry. "Of the 11 continuing care retirement communities we visited, none of them come close to what we've got here at Highland Springs."

Crunching the numbers

When Jerry retired in 2004, the couple headed for the Sun Belt. "We wanted a reasonable cost of living. With one son on the West Coast and one on the East Coast, we came to Dallas--right in the middle," says Jerry.
In 2018, Jerry and Denise decided they wanted more in retirement, so they started educating themselves about different senior living options, including continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs). That's when Highland Springs appeared on their radar.
Jerry, with a career in international business marketing and business management at Kodak, was interested in the numbers.
He was especially intrigued by the community's monthly service package, which bundles the costs of most utilities; maintenance, including appliance repair and replacement; a meal plan at on-site restaurants; regularly scheduled transportation; and more into one predictable bill.
"When you break it down and look at what you're no longer going to be spending, like property taxes and homeowners' insurance, it's a no-brainer," Jerry says. "I did a back-of-the-envelope analysis early on, which made us more comfortable with what the costs boiled down to."
He adds, "Plus, maintenance is taken care of [by the General Services team]. You don't have to call the plumber, and you don't have to get quotes from HVAC people."
Peace of mind
The couple's financial stability is further strengthened by Highland Springs' industry-leading, 90% refundable entrance fee*--the heart of the community's pricing structure. The entrance fee, collected as part of the residency process, will go back to you or your beneficiaries if or when you leave the community.
The community's Home for Life commitment* provides additional peace of mind.
No one ever expects to run out of money, but sometimes unforeseen issues arise that can quickly deplete your hard-earned savings and put you at risk. At Highland Springs, we've planned for life's uncertainties and are prepared to assist eligible residents who outlive their resources. No one will be asked to leave the community because of a genuine inability to pay.
Jerry and Denise appreciate that living at Highland Springs helps relieve pressure on their children--now and in the future.
An active lifestyle
Without the stress and hassle of home maintenance, residents have more time to pursue their hobbies--especially since access to the community's amenities is also included in the monthly service package.
Highland Springs boasts an expansive fitness center, creative arts studio, billiards and game room, woodshop, salon and spa, library, and more.
Jerry and Denise are big fans of the community's eight restaurants and medical center, staffed with full-time health care professionals.
"Most of the other communities we looked at only had one dining room," recalls Jerry. "And the medical center, in my opinion, is the most unique selling proposition that Highland Springs offers. It's head and shoulders above virtually all other Dallas-Fort Worth area CCRCs."
The community's 200-plus clubs and activities create even more opportunities for residents to connect with neighbors who share similar interests.
"I'm involved with golf, putting, disc golf, and bocce," Jerry says. "It's wonderful--such good exercise and great socialization. It's like a vibrant college campus with lectures, parties, and educational opportunities."
The right move
Reflecting on their two active, carefree years at Highland Springs, the Kloses are confident that moving to the community was the best decision for them.
"We are so grateful we found Highland Springs!" says Jerry.
