Here are the top stories in Dallas today:

  1. A 17-year-old is facing murder charges in the wake of his 3-week-old son's death last month. Caleb Blake Brown of Carrollton and the baby's mother brought their son Emerson into a Plano hospital for significant abdominal bruising. The infant was transferred to Children's Medical Center in Dallas, where he was pronounced dead and found to have multiple displaced ribs and a lacerated liver. Brown told police he had squeezed the baby and "repeatedly threw him into the air," ultimately hitting a ceiling fan. (NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth)
  2. Several buildings in Downtown Dallas, including Reunion Tower and The Omni Hotel, will be turning down their lights at night to aid the migrating bird population. Nearly 2 billion birds travel through Texas at night during the spring and fall — one of the largest migrations on the planet. Nighttime building lights attract and disorient the birds, which makes them vulnerable to collisions, according to Lights Out Texas. As such, Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson declared 11 p.m. - 6 a.m. between Sept. 27 and Oct. 17, 2021, as "Lights Out Nights" in Dallas. (WFAA.com)
  3. A woman who was shot face, chest, and arm Monday night on St. Augustine Road in Dallas is expected to recover from her wounds, say police. (WFAA.com)
  4. The 34th and final Dallas VideoFest is currently preparing for its last picture show, which will feature more than 20 indie films and documentaries. VideoFest will run Sept. 29 through Oct. 3 at the Angelika Theater. (Dallas Observer)
  5. The City Of Dallas could soon have its first Office of the Inspector General, which would investigate city misconduct and other government scandals. (KERA News)
