1 Hurt, 1 Dead After South Austin Disturbance Call (UPDATED)

Benito Luna Vargas, 34, died after being badly beaten early Sunday, and police now seek 3 suspects, including Jessica Romero, 37.

AUSTIN, TEXAS — Police identified the victim and suspect in a homicide case that began as a disturbance call early Sunday.

The incident occurred at around 12:30 a.m. at 1215 Southport Dr., where police found two men with obvious trauma throughout their bodies. Callers told police one of the men had been beaten severely and left unconscious, police said in a subsequent update.

Medics attempted to save the victim, Benito Luna Vargas, 34, by administering CPR while transporting him to St. David's South Austin Medical Center. Despite the life-saving efforts, Vargas died a short time later, pronounced deceased at 1:01 am.

A second man who had been assaulted during the same incident was taken to the same hospital, from where he was treated and released, police said.

Police now are looking for three suspects, including Jessica Romero, 37. Police learned Romero and two other suspects — one described as a heavyset Hispanic female in her late 20s to 30s and the other a heavyset Hispanic male in his late 40s to 50s — entered the residence and began assaulting the two victims while demanding valuables. Romero is described as being approximately 5 feet, 7 inches and weighing 130 pounds and has a distinctive mole under her left nostril.

The Travis County Medical Examiner performed an autopsy on the deceased victim on Sunday morning, determining the manner of death to be homicide. Romero is currently charged with aggravated robbery in connection with the incident, police said, although all three suspects may face capital murder charges.

Police noted there is an active warrant for Jessica Romero and up to $1,000 reward for information leading to her arrest. AUSTIN, TEXAS — Police are investigating a death being investigated as a homicide in South Austin, officials said early Sunday.

In a 3:30 a.m. press briefing, an officer told reporters police received numerous calls about a disturbance along the 1200 block of Southport Drive. Upon arrival of police and Austin-Travis County EMS medics, emergency officials found two men with wounds throughout their bodies.

The officer said one of the men, described only as Hispanic, died en route to the hospital. Apparently, police said, a disturbance that had originated in the street spilled into a residence at the location.

No further details were provided. Given the preliminary nature of the investigation, police declined to say whether the men had been stabbed or shot. However, the officer who briefed reporters said the death would be investigated as a homicide.
