Here are the top stories in Austin today:
1) Gov. Greg Abbott and the Texas Veterans Commission announce $31 million in funding for Texas veterans. According to Governor Abbott: "This grant funding was approved by TVC Commissioners in May and will total 139 grants awarded to 121 organizations across Texas. These grants are estimated to serve more than 22,000 Texas veterans."
According to a press release, the grants support a wide range of services, including emergency financial assistance, transportation, legal services, family support services, home modification, and rental and mortgage assistance. KXAN has more on this story here.
2) UT fans brave storms to enjoy tailgating and the football season opener. The Texas Longhorns defeat the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks in their home opener with a final score of 52-10. Check out the full game recap here at Texas Sports.
3) A driver has died after their vehicle was found submerged in North Austin creek. KXAN reports that Austin-Travis County EMS and the Austin Fire Department responded to a submerged vehicle at the 6400 block of Spicewood Springs Rd., on Saturday afternoon.
According. to reports, the vehicle left the road and went into a creek. One person was pulled out of the vehicle but died after extensive CPR efforts. Head to KXAN for more on this story.
4) APD enforces a watercraft ban on Lake Austin through Labor Day weekend. As the Labor Day weekend continues on, the Austin Police Department continues to remind residents that their motorized watercraft are not allowed on Lake Austin through Tuesday, Sept. 6 at sunrise.
Non-motorized devices like kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards can still be used along with watercraft designed for the conventional manner of sitting or standing in the vessel. KVUE has more on this story here.
