But first, today's weather:
☀️ Plenty of sunshine. High: 89 Low: 64.
📢 I'm looking for business owners and marketers in Austin who want to build awareness, connect with customers and increase sales.
I have a limited number of sponsorships available to introduce our Austin Daily readers to local businesses they need to know about. If that's you, then I invite you to learn more and secure your spot now.
Here are the top stories in Austin today:
1) Austin's 911 operator shortage continues to cause concern. Lt. Kenneth Murphy, director of emergency communications, said: "The national standard is for 90% of 911 calls to be answered within 15 seconds. People are waiting on hold when they call 911, in situations where every second counts. As of Oct. 13, the Austin Police Department's answer rate for the month was at 66.25%." Austin currently has patrol sergeants filling in as operators and the city has incorporated some pay increases, but it's still not proven to be enough. Head to KUT to learn more about the impact of staffing shortages.
2) Austin ISD will receive $493,000 for school safety improvements, courtesy of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act. The act was signed into law in June 2022 following the tragedy at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, and "KVUE has reached out to Austin ISD for specifics on how the funding will be used. This story will be updated if a statement is received." So, more to come here, but glad to see members of Congress prioritizing school safety. Head to KVUE for the scoop.
3) On Oct. 20, four of the five candidates for the Austin City Council seat for District 8 participated in a forum to discuss their stances on top local issues. Current District 8 council member Paige Ellis is running for reelection. Head to KUT to watch a recording of the event.
4) If you're like me and regularly run or walk on the Lady Bird Hike & Bike Trail — then you've definitely seen or heard of the infamous "Snake Island." If you're also like me and have absolutely no clue where or how the floating forest got its name — then we've got the piece for you. KUT's latest "ATXplained" breaks down the story of Snake Island – check it out!
5) The Formula One Aramco United States Grand Prix starts today! Looking for an insider's guide to the best parties, concerts, and shows during the event? Check out Austin Monthly's handy guide.
